Habit: Found along stream banks, in wet fields and meadows. A tall stiff stemmed species
that provides its common name ironweed. The woody stalks support large flat-topped violet-purple flower heads
in late summer/fall that attract a large number of insects, ranking it high as a pollinator plant.
Ironweed towers above other plants forming a large clump.
It combines with other late summer and fall flowering species such as goldenrod, Culver’s root and Joe pye weed.
The plant can be propagated from root divisions or by seed. It is also deer resistant.
